This is a pattern for this little battenberg cake. This is a UK pattern.
You will need:
– size 2.5mm hook
– Pale yellow yarn
– Pink yarn
– Wool needle
Stitches used – Chain (ch)
– Double crochet (dc)
Tension gauge is not important.
Make 4 pink/yellow rectangles:
Chain 4 with pale yellow yarn.
Row 1 – Double crochet into 1st chain on hook and in each chain across. Turn. (4 stitches).
Row 2 – Ch 1, dc in each stitch across. Turn. (4 stitches).
Row 3 & 4 – Repeat Row 2. Fasten off and join in new colour (pink)
Row 5 – 8 – Repeat Row 2. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Make 4 yellow cake sides:
Ch 3 with pale yellow yarn
Row 1 – dc in 1st chain on hook and in each stitch across. Turn. (3 stitches).
Row 2 – 8 – ch 1, dc in each stitch across. Turn.
Fasten off leaving a long tail.
Sew with pale yellow yarn.
Begin with yellow/pink rectangles – take 2 and place them right sides together (make sure the pink squares match up with yellow ones – so that the pink squares and diagonal to each other and the same with the yellow squares). Sew through both pieces. Open out so that each rectangle should lay fairly flat. Repeat with remaining two rectangles.
Take one pale yellow rectangle (cake side) and with wrong sides together sew to one side of the cake square. Sew remaining three sides to remaining sides of the pink/yellow square.
With last pink/yellow square sew onto back of cake (again sew wrong sides together – this will create a defined edge). Leave one side open to stuff cake and then stitch closed. Weave in any tails.
Enjoy with a cup of tea 🙂
